Girls Basketball

Katrina Valencia and Kate Galica combined for 25 points as Conestoga topped Upper Darby, 44-20, in the Central League.

Valencia scored 13 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Galica paired 12 points with four rebounds and three assists.

Alliya Jean Baptiste led Upper Darby with nine points.

Boys Basketball

Ryan Mackey scored 23 points as Conestoga earned a 49-33 win over Upper Darby.

The Pioneers led 21-3 after one quarter and never looked back. Nadir Myers led Upper Darby with 12 points. Semaj Chery added six.

Nick Colucci read the pass from the instant it was thrown, took a step across the 3-point arc and picked it off, dribbling down the far sideline at Haverford High School’s Juenger Gymnasium. The Fords’ senior guards got to his own 3-point line, and you could see the gears turning: the shooter’s mindset he’d developed during his younger days told him to pull the trigger.

Then the coaching kicked in: playing with a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter of a Central League game against defending champ Garnet Valley, a rushed, off-balanced shot was not the right one. Colucci gathered himself, waited a beat, then found classmate J.R. Newman plunging towards the bucket, Newman’s stretched-out layup finding twine as the ref’s whistle sounded. 

“Over time, you learn what’s a smart play,” Colucci said, “and passing the ball to JR […] that’s the right play right there. I’m glad I made it.”

Marple Newtown 41, Harriton 37 >> Mary O’Brien hit key baskets down the stretch to lead the Tigers, scoring seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. Haley Levy produced 14 points and seven rebounds, while Brook Impriano chipped in with nine points for the Tigers (4-2).

Annie Aspesi netted a game-high 15 points for the Rams.

Haverford’s Sky Newman was left alone on the outside, directly in front of her team bench.

With time ticking away, the junior guard knew she had little time to think. She was poised to make a basket.

“I had to shoot it with confidence and put it in,” Newman said.

Oh, she did precisely that, drilling the game-winning 3-point basket with about 15 seconds left to play. Garnet Valley’s last attempt was a long-distance shot by Haylie Adamski that fell off the mark as time expired.

Newman’s clutch trey lifted the Fords to a thrilling, 36-34 victory over the Jaguars, upping their record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Central League.

“As a young starter it’s important to remain calm in every situation,” said Newman, who managed eight points and one assist. “The coaches really help us out with that, just trying to stay focused at all times.”

A glance at a Radnor boys basketball roster that shows four juniors in the starting lineup paints the picture of a youthful team.

But with two juniors that have been in the rotation since they were freshmen, and one returning as the program’s leading scorer, the Raptors are anything but green.

As a result, through eight outings this season, they’re also unbeaten.

The latest installment was furnished by 16 points from Charlie Thornton and 24 turnovers forced from a short-handed Strath Haven whose bench got even shorter Tuesday in a 56-38 Radnor victory.

“Even though we’re starting four juniors, we have so much experience and time playing with each other, that it’s just like any other games,” said Danny Rosenblum, a junior who has been groomed to run the point since he was a freshman. “We’re just going out there and playing our game and we trust each other.”

It took less than one minute into Archbishop Carroll’s game at St. Joseph’s Prep for Harold Ivery Jr. to be whistled with his second foul. When the Patriots’ senior forward headed the bench, Francis Bowe’s first thought: oh, no.

Down their best offensive option, the Patriots knew they needed a top-notch defensive effort against the Hawks to survive the Catholic League opener. Ivery’s presence on the court against St. Joe’s imposing and talented young forward Tristan Guillouette was a crucial part of those plans.

“He just said relax, you’ll be fine, do the same thing,” Ivery said. “Just have to deal with it, no need to get mad.”

“Some kids [in early foul trouble], sometimes they’ll stop being aggressive,” Bowe said. “We said it is what it is, if you get fouled out — you have to play your game, otherwise they’re going to get really comfortable.”

Cardinal O’Hara had no trouble overcoming Bethlehem Catholic Monday evening in a rematch of a 2021 PIAA Class 5A quarterfinal playoff game.

All-Delco senior guard Sydni Scott tallied 15 points to lead the Lions to a 48-29 road win.

O’Hara outscored the Eagles, 30-11, in the second half after the game was tied 18-18 at intermission.

Annie Welde scored 11 points and Bridget Dawson chipped in with eight for the Lions.

The Lions had defeated the reigning District 11 champions, 64-55, on the way to a PIAA Class 5A state title last year.

Boys Basketball

Jake West stepped up in crunch time for Bonner-Prendergast Monday. West scored 16 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to help the Friars to their ninth win of the season with a 53-43 decision over St. Joseph’s Prep in Catholic League action.

Khaire Dixon and Seamus Rodgers excelled off the bench for B-P.

Bonner-Prendergast relied on its defense until the offense got going against Haverford School Friday.

The Friars held the Fords to single digits in the first three quarters and that gave the offense time to heat up and pull out a 53-35 victory.

Bonner-Prendie outscored Haverford School, 35-16, in the second and third quarters to climb out of a 9-6 hole in the first period. Shakur Smith led MBAP with a game-high 18 points. Baasil Sanders and Brady Egan pitched in with 11 points each.

Dave Kearney topped Haverford School with 11 points.

Girls Basketball

Bailey Garrison scored 18 points in leading Penncrest to a 63-42 win over Chester.

Garrison had six points in a second quarter in which the Lions blanked Chester, 12-0, for a 20-point halftime lead. Kyra Curci added 12 points, and Emily Huggins supplied 10 points.

Ja’Mya Muhammad led the Chippers with 12 points. Shyne Mall added eight points.

RIDLEY 47, OXFORD 20 » Kyla Carney poured in a game-high 13 points to lead the Green Raiders (3-4) at the West Chester University Tournament.

Kailyn Bell finished with 11 points, and Emily Liberio added six.

Boys Basketball

Googie Seidman’s shooting touch was on at the most opportune time.

The Haverford guard hit three fourth-quarter 3-pointers on the way to 21 points as the Fords topped Council Rock South, 56-48, to lift the Juenger Classic title.

Seidman hit six triples on the night. Nick Colucci did the early damage with 24 points, scoring 10 of the Fords’ 14 points in the third quarter. JR Newman added 10 points.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 65, ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 31 » Shawn Smith scored nine points, and Dean Coleman-Newsome was limited to eight as the Patriots fell in the Jay Craven Memorial Championship game of the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood.

Even if you didn’t know exactly who he was, there was something strangely familiar about the young man working the sideline for Episcopal Academy’s boys squad on Wednesday night. The measured but intense demeanor, the looks at referees after a disagreed-with call, the walk-and-clap down the sidelines after a timely bucket. 

“I’ve got to be honest, I’ve been practicing those moves with my stuffed animals since I was three years old,” Taylor Wright said. “I’ve definitely picked up a few things.”

When you’re the oldest son of Jay Wright, it might just be built into the DNA. 

The younger Wright, EA’s junior varsity coach, was called into varsity duty this week during the Churchmen’s appearance at the Marple Newtown Holiday Tournament. Brian Shanahan, the former Temple walk-on now in his third year coaching at Episcopal, was out with COVID.
