The 6-foot-5 senior wing is averaging more than 17.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg for the Raiders (12-8 as of Feb. 3), including a 29-point effort in a 70-58 win against Harriton Jan. 30 . Last winter, he averaged 14 ppg and led the Raiders in rebounding, while receiving team co-MVP, All-Main Line and All-Central League honors.

Q: What has been your favorite moment so far this season and why?

A: Beating Penncrest on the road earlier this season (a 32-30 win Dec. 13).  It was a great team win against a program that has won two of the past three District 1 championships and had really owned our matchup over my career.  To get that win in front of their fans was a great feeling.

Q: What aspect of your game do you feel you have improved the most this season?

A: Being able to score off the dribble, in the paint and in other ways that aren’t just catch and shoot.

Q: What part of your game are you working on the most currently?

A: I’ve been working to get touches in the paint and post to take advantage of matchups I get against smaller guys.

Oscar Uduma is Bonner-Prendergast’s blue-collar worker, a specialist in defense and dirty work.

The senior swingman handled his usual chores on the Frederico Gymnasium floor on Friday night, lifting three steals, dishing four assists, battling in the paint against Archbishop Ryan’s big men despite a disadvantage in height.

He also kick-started the Friars on their way to a 77-53 victory with a rare display of offensive firepower in the first quarter, scoring 10 points with a pair of three-pointers and two other mid-range shots.

“Just had a good night,” Uduma said after Bonner-Prendergast improved to 15-3 (9-2 in the Philadelphia Catholic League).

Junior guard Malik Edwards led all scorers with 21 for Bonner-Prendergast, which kept pace in its drive to secure a first-round bye and top-four seed in the PCL playoffs, which start the week of Feb. 10.

Archbishop Wood’s Marcus Randolph puts it all together in road win against Carroll

At the end of each day, Archbishop Wood coach John Mosco and Marcus Randolph hop in the car together.

The two make the trip from Warminster toward Randolph’s hometown of Willingboro, N.J., meeting Randolph’s dad in between.

And during those 45-minute car rides, Mosco has learned more and more about one of his many junior standouts.

But Mosco was still waiting for that breakout performance, a game in which Randolph showed out for a full 32 minutes. Friday night, that game happened.

Randolph ignited the Vikings with seven of their first 12 points and scored 18 — one of four players in double figures — as Wood rolled past Archbishop Carroll 80-61 on the road. Despite a four-plus minute scoreless drought at the start of the third quarter, the Vikings closed strong to pick up their 10th Catholic League win of the season and remain just a half-game behind first-place Neumann-Goretti.

Seidman the hero as Haverford pulls out another squeaker

By Matthew DeGeorge

Ten times this season, Haverford has been involved in a boys basketball game decided by five points or fewer. During a six-game slide, those coin-flip finishes seemed to constantly go against them.

But the Fords are changing their luck in the last two weeks.

Friday, it was John Seidman’s lay-up with 1.3 seconds left that made the difference in yet another nail-biter, a 38-37 win over Upper Darby for the Fords’ fifth straight win.

After Onyekachi Nzeh (13 points) put upper Darby up with 10 seconds left, Seidman charged down the court to tie it and get fouled with 1.3 ticks left. Seidman tallied 17 points.

John Schievert added 10 points for the Fords (11-8, 7-7). All seven of Haverford’s league losses are by five points or fewer; not among the close games, though, is the season sweep of Lower Merion, by a combined 19 points.

AJ Tucker added nine points for the Royals (11-9, 6-8), who’ve dropped three straight.

Chester outshoots Chichester in 78-58 win

By Mike Mayer, Delcohoops.com

It was expected that the best strategy for Chichester to stay with Chester was to match their speed when playing defense but slow the game down when the Eagles had the ball.  Not exactly.  Chi decided that running with the Clippers was their best chance to beat a surging power house.  The game seemed more like a track meet than a basketball game. The action was sometimes so quick that Delcohoops Play-by-play announcer, Dave Burman, wouldn’t have a chance to write down a basket before possession changed and another basket was scored.

The play was so fast and furious that our box score shows over 30 turnovers (14 for Chi and 16 for the Clippers).  Players were running so hard down the court that simple lay-ups were missed as the shooter miscalculated his speed when approaching the rim. Although Chester was always in control of the score and was never threatened with a loss, the pace of the game was maintained by both teams through out the game.

Chi found itself in trouble in the third quarter when Chester decided to execute a punishing full-court press which resulted in numerous Chi turnovers and several baskets for Chester.  As the score separation increased to 25 points the Clippers backed-off of the full-court press and both teams began mass substitutions to give their respective bench players some varsity court time.  However, even the substitutes coming into the game kept up the pace of the game with great speed and aggressive play.

Karell Watkins continued his recent tear, scoring 15 of his 32 points in the third quarter and adding 14 rebounds in another douible-double performance for Chester (15-3, 7-0). Zahmir Carroll (12 points), Fareed Burton (11) and Akeem Taylor (10) joined Watkins in double-figures.

Josh Hankins led Chichester (8-10, 2-4) with 14 points, and Jasir Shaw chipped in 11 and Andrew Monroe with 10 as Chi’s three-game winning streak ended.

Game of runs ends in Conestoga’s favor as Pioneers shut down Ridley

By Andrew Hayn & Josh Verlin

When thinking of Conestoga’s season up to this point, one word comes to mind: streaky. The Pioneers, who only returned one player with varsity minutes last season –– senior Connor Steele –– started off the season with a win, followed by a six-game losing streak. The young squad then benefitted from the turn of the new year, as they won seven of the next eight, including a five-game winning streak within the Central League in January.

Mike Troy, head coach for Conestoga, complimented his young group for maturing throughout the season, though they’d lost three of four headed into Thursday night’s Central League matchup at Ridley.

“You know, you look at some of our early games and our youth really showed,” Troy admitted. “When your top seven guys all graduate…we’re a good team, there’s a difference between being a good team and an experienced, varsity team. So we learned a lot of tough lessons early in the year, and hopefully now they’re coming into fruition.”
