Boys: James Brenner leads way in Unionville’s OT win over Haverford School

By Joseph Santoliquito

James Brenner would like to pound the ball through the court if he could.

It’s part of his internal mantra of focusing on the little things. Brenner feels hard dribbles have made his handle tighter and allows him to be quicker to the basket. It’s helped the gangly 6-foot-5 Unionville boys basketball sophomore get offers from Bryant and Sacred Heart. It’s aided him in taking his game out more than it was a year ago.

The emphasis on minutia has also created career games like Brenner had Saturday night, when the Longhorns beat the Inter-Academic League’s Haverford School 55-49 in overtime in the last game of the City of Basketball Love Showcase at Harriton High School.

Brenner scored a career-best 17 points in the nightcap. The Longhorns (6-1) also got 12 points from senior guard Ryan Brown and 10 from senior forward Charlie Kammeier, who combined for 11 of Unionville’s 13 points in overtime.

Kailyn Bell paced the Green Raiders with 15 points and Kyla Carney added 11.

Boys: Matt McCarthy settling into new role, school at Episcopal Academy

By Mike Livingston

When Matt McCarthy transferred into Episcopal Academy to begin the 2023-24 school year, there was one question he was being asked; ‘Are you related to Kevin?’

Matt, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, made the decision to reclassify and transfer to Episcopal this summer, leaving Archmere Academy (Del.). That meant teaming up in the backcourt with the Churchmen’s standout guard, Kevin McCarthy, which meant people were bound to ask the obvious.

“I heard that question all the time,” Matt McCarthy said. “People on Twitter, as soon as I said was going [to Episcopal], were like, ‘Are you related to Kevin?’ I get to school, ‘Are you related to Kevin?’ We started messing with people, telling them we were.”

While the two McCarthys aren’t related, they still bring a similar intensity and talent to the floor.

Kevin was Episcopal’s top option last season, averaging 18.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and a steal per game, and continues to be an on-the-court favorite of head coach Taylor Wright.

Boys: Herrenkohl, Lower Merion run past Garnet Valley to stay unbeaten

By Josh Verlin

As a sophomore, Adam Herrenkohl didn’t make the Lower Merion varsity basketball team. He was devastated.

“When I found out, I was just in shock,” he said.

“[He] was really upset about that,” Aces coach Gregg Downer recalled.

A Wynnewood resident, Herrenkohl had grown up going to Lower Merion camps since his elementary school days, becoming good friends with current classmate and teammate Owen McCabe before they turned 10. Coming back to Montgomery Avenue every summer, he spent days being coached by the likes of Justin McFadden, Jack Forrest, Steve Pendleton and others who led the Aces to Central League and District 1 championships, dreaming of the day he’d be able to follow in their footsteps.

To find out he wasn’t yet good enough to even sit on the end of the varsity bench was a wake-up call.
