In the third quarter of Episcopal Academy’s Inter-Ac league road game at The Haverford School, EA senior point guard Kyle Sacchetta found himself alone behind the 3-point arc.

As he went to shoot, he paused, just for a moment, then fired a pass down low to cutting forward Jermaine Rhoden for an easy layup.

That type of ball movement was the difference for the Churchmen, who pulled away to a 57-40 win at the Fords in a key bounce-back win for a team with Inter-Ac championship aspirations.

“We’ve been talking to them about taking our program, taking our team from good, taking them to great. And the same way, it’s just like our shot selection, head coach Craig Conlin said. “We could have a good shot, but if we move it one more, two more times, we could have a great shot, and with Sacchetta to Jermaine right there, it was perfect.”

Delco Christian finds reversal of fortune against Lower Moreland

After getting beaten by 36 points and 30 points at the hands of Lower Moreland last year, Delco Christian was hoping for a measure of revenge on Tuesday night on its home court.

Instead, what they got was another blowout. Another game where the fourth quarter was basically meaningless, where one team left feeling really good about itself for an evening while the other wondered what just happened for 32 minutes.

A familiar atmosphere.

Except this time, it was the Knights who were the ones running away to an ever-increasing lead, walking away celebrating after a 75-48 win over the defending Bicentennial Athletic League champions.

Chester’s Marquis Collins has known for about a week that he wanted to join the Delaware State Hornets next season.

It was just a matter of waiting for the right time to announce his decision.

After hitting the game-winning jumper in a win over Penn Wood on Thursday night – a game in which he finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists – the stars seemed to be aligned for the 6-foot-7 wing forward.

“I decided after New Year’s day,” Collins said. “My parents told to wait a little bit to announce. We were real excited about everything but decided to wait a little bit. I had a great game yesterday and just felt like perfect timing yesterday to do it.”

With Collins’ announcement, it marks a third Chester Clipper who has made arrangements to call the Dover campus his home.

Collins becomes AP’s all-time leading scorer

In a community where athletic potential is rarely kept a secret, Jawan Collins’ historical possibilities were spoken in hushed tones until last year.

It wasn’t until after the 2014-15 season — when Collins cracked the 1,000-point plateau as a junior, leading Academy Park to the District One Class AAAA tournament — that assistant coach Ron Bright pointed to the record books. If all goes well, Bright told the guard, that record for most points in school history should be yours.

Saturday, as clinically and methodically as the first 1,200 went through the hoop, so did the historic No. 1,295, eclipsing Byu-Deen Twyman’s school record in a 72-54 win over West Chester Rustin.

Collins canned a jumper from a step inside the 3-point arc with 51 seconds left in the first half, his ninth point of the night. He entered with 1,286, trailing Victor Colon (1,290) and Twyman (1,294), teammates who graduated in 2000.

When you ask Ridley’s Mike Patterson how tall he is, the senior forward will offer a 6-foot-4, before sheepishly covering with, “or, maybe 6-5.”

In contrast to Patterson’s unassuming height, there was no doubting the vertical credentials of his opponents Friday, Lower Merion’s tandem of 6-9 Jeremy Horn and 6-6 Dion Harris, with his outsized leaping ability.

Yet by the time Patterson marched to the bench to a grateful ovation with 3:21 remaining, making way for the subs to play out a 61-40 demolition by the Green Raiders, there was no doubting that Patterson stood tallest.

The senior collected a career-high eight points — heck, he’d scored 12 combined in 10 appearances this season — but saved his best efforts for the defensive end, completely muzzling Horn and Harris.

Chester leaders are there when it counts

When the crowd gets rowdy towards the ends of games at Penn Wood High School’s gymnasium — fondly called the Shoe Box in some circles — the building takes on a claustrophobic feel. Patrons sit mere feet from the court on all sides. Their yells increase, the room grows deafening and opponents sweat out the final minutes.

Chester felt the phenomenon once again Thursday night as they squeaked out a 54-47 win over the rival Patriots. In the second quarter, the Clippers led by as many as 16. They held a 10-point advantage in the third. But Penn Wood refused to go away. With 1:58 on the clock, Jordan Johnson hit a turnaround bank shot to tie the game at 47 and the walls started to close in on the visitors.

“When you play your rival in your league, they’re not going to give up or quit by any means,” said Chester coach Larry Yarbray Sr. “Our guys got a little unfocused, got a little careless with the ball.”
