Sun Valley’s DeAngelo, Freeman shoot lights out, knock down Pottsgrove

Marvin Freeman doesn’t bat an eyelid when presented the latest insane stat line produced by Vinny DeAngelo.

Wednesday evening at Norristown Area High School, the Sun Valley guard went 12-for-12 from the field. DeAngelo’s return of 27 points actually hurts his postseason scoring average, and, Freeman points out with a wry smile, DeAngelo did miss a free throw in the fourth quarter.

But on the whole, none of it surprises his long-time teammate.

“I call him our mid-range assassin,” Freeman said. “He kills from the inside knocking down shots. It opens up more from everyone else because when he goes to take that shot, it opens up lanes where he can kick it out to the shooters.”

DeAngelo was simply perfect, and he had plenty of help as sixth-seeded Sun Valley throttled No. 10 Pottsgrove, 68-49, in the District 1 Class 5A semifinal.

The win sends Sun Valley (18-7) to Saturday’s district final at Temple against Ches-Mont foe West Chester East, after the top-seeded Vikings knocked off Penncrest, 40-32, in the nightcap. Tip-off is at 2.

Richardson’s warm spell ices chilly game as East topples Penncrest

The locker room of a team that scored just eight points in the first half of a boys high school basketball game isn’t going to rival Disney World as the happiest place on earth.

But for West Chester East Wednesday evening at Norristown Area High School, it also wasn’t the bleakest of places.

“At halftime, my coach was just like, ‘take it one possession at a time. Don’t rush,’” East guard Tym Richardson said. “Because in the beginning, we were rushing, we weren’t playing our game. We started playing as a team, started attacking and that’s what got us the lead.”

No one was as well-positioned as Richardson to enact change once the Vikings left the locker room. In a game where offense was in desperately short supply (see as evidence 33 combined turnovers against 25 made field goals), Richardson knew that a little would go a long way.

Asparagus, Pettit carry Rustin past Penn Wood to lock up state bid

By Steve Moore

West Chester Rustin senior forward Tajir Asparagus has been a four-year starter for the Golden Knights boys basketball team.

Wednesday night, Asparagus was playing his last home game on his home floor. And he made it count.

The senior led the Golden Knights to a tough, 56-52 win over Penn Wood that put the Golden Knights into the PIAA Class 5A playoffs, and ended the Patriots’ season.

Asparagus had 16 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two assists as he and superb freshman IV Pettit, who led Rustin with 21 points, combined to better Patriots (16-10) senior Devante Smith, who led all scorers with 22 points. Penn Wood turned the ball over 16 times, with three of those coming in the decisive fourth quarter.

“Taj is a four-year starter and he is a leader of this team,” West Chester Rustin coach Keith Cochran said. “He was playing his last home game and he came up big for us. I expect that from him because he is that kind of player and a leader on this team. IV was big again and he hit 10 of 11 from the free throw line and he and Taj and the rest the guys closed out the game well. This is the first step for us.”

When a team holds Coatesville’s Jhamir Brickus to 13 points entering the fourth quarter, it has to feel good about its chances. The junior guard averages 26.6 points per game.

But Coatesville showed Tuesday night that it has more than Brickus, as Dapree Bryant and John Proctor scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, in a 71-66 victory over Lower Merion in the District 1 Class 6A semifinals at the Liacouras Center.

“They picked me up,” Brickus said. “I just had to play defense and I made everyone around me better by creating space for them.”

Lower Merion played a box-and-one defense against Brickus for most of the game, and held the junior without a touch until 2 minutes, 43 seconds remained in the the first quarter. It was working, as the Aces took an early 16-4 lead. Jack Forrest led the charge with 12 first-quarter points.

“We’ve seen this before,” Coatesville coach Fred Thompson said. “We kind of got a little loud on the bench because we weren’t guarding, but we settled down and got our composure back.”

Henry rises to stage as Abington tops Pennridge in District 1-6A semifinals

Everywhere Sean Yoder went Tuesday night, Maurice Henry matched him step-for-step.

Play any team three times and at some point, adjustments have to be made so Abington decided to make one on the defensive end. Henry knew he’d have to play at a different level all night guarding one of the best players in District 1 and it translated into his best overall game of the year.

The senior gave the No. 1 Ghosts a needed spark as they topped No. 4 Pennridge in the District 1-6A semifinals at Temple’s Liacouras Center and advanced to their third straight district title game.

“I had to play harder than I normally do and I had to step up for the team,” Henry said. “I had to sacrifice my body for the team and play as hard as I could to stay in front of him. He’s their whole team, you limit him and it’s hard for them to go.”

Not only was Henry stellar defensively, shadowing Yoder off every screen and cut and limiting the Navy recruit to 11 points, he had a terrific offensive game with 15 points. Facing yet another zone defense, the Ghosts were moving the ball around to try and stretch out Pennridge’s 2-3 but also passing up some looks.
