Boys: Carroll silence La Salle in locking up PCL playoff berth

By Joseph Santoliquito

The Archbishop Carroll boys squad was facing a daunting group Friday night. Not only were the Patriots facing host La Salle in a critical late-season Catholic League contest, they were challenged by a cast of characters including SpongeBob SquarePants, Superman, a strutting Banana Man, Star Wars storm troopers, a few Tom Cruises from Top Gun, a couple of pinstriped convicts and one crazy nun.

It was “Silent Night” at La Salle, where the crowd stays silent until the home team reaches 10 points and then erupts.

Carroll’s Moses Hipps and Dean Coleman-Newsome proudly called themselves the silencers, after combining for 45 points in leading the Pats to a surprising 72-66 victory.

Conestoga students rushed their home floor as a Garnet Valley half-court heave fell short.

After 40 minutes of play, it was finally time to celebrate. Fans embraced Ryan Mackey, who had just provided another act of late-game heroics.

The senior guard buried the game-winning free throw with 2.7 seconds left on the clock to give Conestoga a one-point victory as it defeated the Jaguars 34-33 in double overtime in the first round of the Central League playoffs on Thursday night. Led by Mackey, the Pioneers overcame an early deficit in a slow-paced, low-scoring affair by getting points in the right opportunities down the stretch.

“What a game,” Conestoga head coach Mike Troy said. “We went down early, and I thought the guys really dug down on the defensive end, held Garnet down scoring-wise to give us a chance on the offensive end.”

Boys: Seidman, Fords put it all together against Penncrest

For most of the season, Haverford’s boys basketball team hasn’t had the benefit of its full rotation. Between a lengthy hand injury to guard Brian Weiner, which coincided with the return from a brief absence by J.R. Newman, the full seven-man rotation that coach Keith Heinerichs had envisioned wasn’t all there together.

That Haverford could still win 16 games and garner the third seed in the Central League tournament despite those travails is a testament to the rest of the roster’s talent. And with the full group now healthy, the Fords are dangerous.

Of course, if Googie Seidman shoots like he did Thursday night, there’s a lot of personnel groupings the Fords can win with. Seidman hit seven 3-pointers for a game-high 23 points as Haverford jumped all over sixth-seeded Penncrest early en route to a 53-38 win.

“I was just really looking for my shot,” Seidman said. “When I had my openings, I would take it every time. It’s all about confidence. I was shooting confidently, and once they start going in, it gets easier.”
