As Jameer Nelson Jr. makes the transition from multi-sport athlete to basketball player, the biggest key, he said, is to stay aggressive and locked in at all times. At any time, any possession, he can come up with a key play. Relax and let up for a moment, and the opportunity might pass.

So when he stood on the wing in the final minute of the Haverford School’s game at St. Joe’s Prep on Wednesday afternoon, he didn’t relax and watch as Fords teammate Kharon Randolph dribbled his way through the Hawks’ defense. He stayed aggressive, cutting to the hoop, receiving the feed from Randolph and finishing strong at the rim.

Matt Dade was 9 of 13 from the free-throw line and poured in a game-high 24 points as Episcopal Academy downed Friends Central 65-52 in nonleague action.

Alex Capitano drained three 3-pointers and scored 20 points, while Jack Fitzpatrick added 10 points for the Churchmen, who outscored Friends Central by 16 points in the second half.

Garnet Valley’s Austin Laughlin can relax. His quest for membership in the 1,000-point club is complete.

Laughlin tallied 18 points, including No. 1,000 of his career Tuesday night to pace the Jaguars to a 63-43 victory over Upper Darby in Central League boys basketball action.  

He is the sixth player in Jaguar history to reach that coveted milestone. Connor O’Brien took game-high honors for GV with 19 points. Neel Beniwal added 13 and Greg Vlassopoulos chipped in with 10.

Jalun Trent and Kymir Roper led Upper Darby with nine points each.

Appearing below are all six of our top 10s, with PIAA district and this season’s record displayed in parentheses. Only those schools competing for PIAA state championships are eligible for ranking purposes.

As a child growing up in West Reading, Carl Schnellenbach was known as “Schnelly.”

That moniker was later shortened by a letter to become one of the most recognizable handles in Delaware County sports history.

“Schnell,” he said often. “It’s just Schnell.”

No first or last name was needed.

“That’s who he was,” said his son-in-law Chas Maiers, the assistant to the superintendent in the Ridley School District. “He wasn’t Carl and he wasn’t Mr. Schnellenbach. He was Schnell.”

Schnell died early Sunday morning at Taylor Hospice in Ridley Park. He was 84 and had been in failing health for a number of years.

Penncrest 63, Strath Haven 36 – Tyler Norwood poured in 34 points, draining six 3-pointers and going 10-for-11 from the free throw line as the Lions (3-0, 2-0) rolled.

Ryan Morris led Strath Haven (1-3, 0-2) with 12 points.
