Boys & Girls: Cobb steps up late in Chester victory

Terrance Cobb saved 10 of his 13 points for the fourth quarter to help Chester rally for a 50-42 victory over Cumberland Valley Sunday in the Hoops for Harmony Stand Against Racism Showcase at Chambersburg High.

Cobb’s work in the fourth quarter enabled the Clippers to outscore the Eagles, 21-9 and erase a 33-29 deficit.

Kevin Rucker backed Cobb with 11 points. Isaiah Freeman and Lorenzo Jenkins pitched in with 10 each to for the Clippers (6-3).

Cumberland Valley led, 10-9, after the first quarter but Chester rallied to take a 20-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

PENNWOOD 72, GARNET VALLEY 62 » Anthony Murray shot 9-for-11 from the free throw line and scored 18 points to help the Patriots hold off the Jaguars. Evan Borward scored 16 points.

Jake Sniras of Garnet Valley led all scorers with 20 points. Logan McKee added 14 points and 12 rebounds. GV made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring Penn Wood, 31-23.

MARPLE NEWTOWN 60, CHURCH FARM 45 » Matt Cantwell posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Joey Sanfrancesco added 13 points off the bench.

Girls Basketball:

Bailey Garrison scored nine points, but it wasn’t enough as Penncrest dropped a 42-28 decision to Harriton. Kathryn Harding added six points for the Lions.

Girls: Episcopal Academy rallies to beat Springfield

Episcopal Academy turned up the defensive pressure in the second half to rally for a 42-35 nonleague victory over Springfield.

The Churchwomen held the Cougars to just two points in the third quarter. Amanda Purcell saved eight of her 12 points for the second half. She had six of EA’s eight points in the third quarter. Gaeli Keffer-Scharpf tallied seven of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. Riley Cassidy pitched in with 10 points.

Anabel Kreydt paced the Cougars with 10 points. Mia Valerio added nine.

NOTRE DAME 45, MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 31 » Katie Halligan tallied 16 points and the Irish put up 27 points in the second half to pull past the Magic. Maeve McErlane

added 10 points for ND.

COATESVILLE 55, ACADEMY PARK 26 » The Red Raiders held the Knights to single digits in each quarter. Libby Taggart and Aidan Langley led the offense with 11 points each. Emani Banks topped Academy Park with 10 points. Akirah Hill chipped in with eight.

In the Central League Friday:

RADNOR 35, HAVERFORD 32 >> Paige Yurchak and Ellie Davis tallied eight points each as the Raptors survived in overtime. Mary Sareen and Ava Gummel contributed seven points apiece for Radnor.

McKenna Walsh of Haverford led all scorers with 10 points. Caroline Dotsey added seven points.

Boys: Seidman’s late surge lifts Haverford past Pennridge

Googie Seidman saved five of his nine points for the fourth quarter to help Haverford hold off Pennridge, 50-44, in nonleague boys basketball action Saturday.

J.R. Newman led the Fords with 15 points. Kevin Gannon pitched in with 12.

RADNOR 38, ACADEMY AT PALUMBO 33 » Danny Rosenblum and Pierce Justice paced a balanced attack with eight points each for the Raptors (11-0). Cooper Mueller and Jackson McKee pitched in with six points apiece.

EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 62, RUSTIN 38 » T.J. Lamb had a team-high 17 points and Sam Malloy added eight to help the Churchmen snap a two-game losing streak.

STRATH HAVEN 71, INTERBORO 48 » Jaden Jauregui posted a double-double as the Panthers put up 58 points in the final three quarters to break the game open. Jauregui paired 22 points with 10 rebounds. Matt Schuler chipped in with 17 points and eight assists. Jack Edwards drilled a pair of threes and finished with 10 points.

Dominic Gunter led Interboro with 13 points.

CHICHESTER 54, BRANDYWINE 48 » Maz Sayed and Ahkir Keys combined for 28 points to help the Eagles bounce back from a tough loss to Chester. Sayed led the way with 16 points. Keys chipped in with 12. Zaryin Keys added nine points.

KEYSTONE ACADEMY 71, CHESTER 63 » The Clippers put on a surge in the fourth quarter but the comeback fell short. Kevin Ruck tied for game-high honors with 20 points to lead Chester. Larenzo Jerkins joined him in double figures with 15 points, while Isaiah Freeman pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Boys: Kevin Rucker gets 20 points but Clippers fall to Keystone Academy Kings

Chester falls to 5-3 after a 71-63 setback at the hands of the Keystone Academy Kings in the Hoops For Harmony: Stand Against Racism Showcase in Chambersburg, PA.
One thing is a definite when the Chester Clippers travel to a Showcase event and that being they will not get a cupcake to play.
Originally Chester was schedule to play western PA’s Mt. Lebanon which would’ve been a rematch of the 2011 State Championship.

However, due to COVID, Mt. Lebanon had to pull out of the event.
The tournament organizers were now faced with finding a replacement for their game against newly formed Keystone Academy Prep out of Erie, PA. With a starting lineup of 6’0″, 6’1″, 6’7″, 6’9″ and 6’10” coupled with reserves of 6’5, 6’9″ and 6’9″ the coaches were not raising their hands to play such a program. The director did not hesitate to contact Coach Taylor and Coach Taylor did not back down from the challenge. These are the kind of situations that has garnered the Chester Clippers their reputation as a nationally recognized “Legitimate High School” program.

Girls: Springfield’s Kearny gets 4 3-pointers for win over Ridley

It was a low scoring affair with a great defensive effort from both teams but Springfield was able to find a few more baskets to pull out the 29-22 victory last night.

Kaitlyn Kearney netted a team-high 12 points (all 3-pointers) for the Cougars. Anabel Kreydt tossed in seven points and Mia Valerio contributed six. Springfield (8-2) is undefeated in the Central League.

The teams combined for 13 points in the first half and the visiting Cougars held a slight 12-11 edge after three quarters. Abbi Hinchey led the Green Raiders with seven points, while Kailyn Bell and Kyra Carney added six each.

Hicke, Radnor go 10 rounds with Haverford High in unbeaten battle

Jackson Hicke needed a cut man with swabs behind the ears Friday night. The lithe 6-foot-5 Radnor junior is a walking weather vane that looks like he may not stand up to a strong wind. They see him, they skin and bones. Don’t make that mistake. It’s easy to belie the grit underneath by his cool demeanor and choir boy appearance.

It was right there in crimson speckles that dotted his white Radnor uniform, all over his arms and even behind his left leg. You couldn’t miss the blood that spouted from his left nostril that forced him to sit during a portion of Radnor’s Central League showdown against visiting Haverford High School.

When he had to bear down, Hicke did. With a wad of gauze up his nose looking like he just went 10 rounds, Hicke calmly nailed four free throws in the closing minute to secure Radnor’s 43-40 victory over Haverford.
