For all of the success Fred Pickett Jr. had as a high school basketball coach, it pales in comparison to what he did for the children of Chester off the court.
Mr. Pickett worked tirelessly, behind the scenes, of course, to give kids from his lifelong home a fighting chance for a successful life.
“He never gave up on anyone,” said Larry Yarbray Sr., who replaced Pickett as the boys basketball coach at Chester High School in 2008. “He stood by you no matter what.”
