Boys: Chichester leaning on Sayed to lead the way to successful year

When Clyde Jones started working with Mazen Sayed six years ago, he knew he was working with his future point guard. It wasn’t long after Jones had resigned from his position at Girard College and took the head job at Chichester that he met Sayed, whose older brother Adam was on Jones’ first Chi squads, and it was clear that the younger brother was one to watch.

“We always knew,” the Eagles’ sixth-year coach said. “He’s been our point guard since freshman year — I didn’t give it to him, I wanted him to earn it, I wanted to see him dominate the JV level and so it took him some time, but once he got it…”

Now Mazen Sayed is leading the way for a senior-laden Chichester, which has eyes on a successful season after achieving something of a breakthrough a year ago. He’s their leading scorer and leads the team in minutes, steals and assists, and their no-doubt most valuable player, traits he all showed during a 50-39 win over Council Rock North on Monday night.

Girls: Cardinal O’Hara hoping She Got Game experience pays off

By Liam O’Murchu

Cardinal O’Hara began their defense of their PIAA 5A state championship with a 58-53 loss to the Cannon School (NC) on Saturday afternoon at the She Got Game Classic in Springfield, Virginia. O’Hara graduated three crucial players from the state championship squad in Maggie Doogan (Richmond), Sydni Scott (Marshall), and Annie Welde (Villanova) and returns this year with a much younger team.

But the youth of the squad is something that they are leaning into. Although this year’s squad may not have the height and experience last year’s team did, they make up for it elsewhere.

“Last year, we were six-foot-[tall] almost across the whole board,” head coach Chrissie Doogan said. “So we had a lot of length, a lot of height. We wouldn’t have gotten out-rebounded like we did today last year. But this year’s team is probably quicker and just as scrappy.”

Boys: Archbishop Carroll’s three-man backcourt coming together

Francis Bowe isn’t exactly sure what word properly describes the play of Archbishop Carroll’s three starting guards, referring to senior Dean Coleman-Newsome, sophomore Jake West and freshman Ian Williams as a dangerous backcourt “triplet.”

After a 71-55 triumph over Germantown Academy on Saturday, three-headed monster might be a more accurate moniker.

“I feel like at any time, all three of them can go off, two of the three [or] one of the three,” Bowe said. “But they’re all dangerous in their own way and they all try to make each other better.”

What the Patriots have to offer in the backcourt was on full display at West Chester University in Saturday’s first of three Inter-Ac vs. Catholic League matchups. Carroll (3-0) defeated GA (1-3) behind impressive performances from Williams (23 pts) and West (21 pts).

It’s a season of significant change for Bonner-Prendergast boys’ basketball, and the moving parts have come together early for the Friars.

With first-year head coach Billy Cassidy — a former Friends’ Central and Neumann University standout — at the helm, Bonner is a transformed team, powered by three key additions in junior transfers Reggie Selden, Kevin Rucker Jr. and Nelson Lamizana. And the new core of Friars hoops has run out to a great start to the year.

“We’re doing good so far,” Selden said. “We know what we have to do, and I feel like now we just have to do it. We have all the pieces, and now we just have to put it together.”

Girls: Archbishop Carroll loses close one

Archbishop Carroll nearly claimed victory over a nationally ranked opponent at the She Got Game Classic in Springfield, Va.

Clovis West High (Calf.), which is ranked 25th in the country by MaxPreps, dealt Carroll a 50-45 setback.

Despite facing a suffocating press and physical man defense most of the game, the Patriots (0-2) trailed by two points late in the game. Brooke Wilson poured in 16 points. All-Delco Taylor Wilson netted 13 points and freshman Alexis Elberz chipped in with 11.

In other action from the She Got Game Classic:

Girls: Kreydt steps up as Springfield (Delco.) wins Central opener

Ky McNichol never has to worry about Anabel Kredyt dragging her teammates down.

“She never has a bad day,” the Springfield (Delco.) coach said of the Cougars’ senior. “She’s always happy — she’s always happy to be around the team, happy to be around the coaches, happy to be around her friends. She definitely makes basketball fun.”

More than just a friendly face, Kreydt is a key piece to Springfield’s success; the 5-foot-10 forward is a three-year starter, a team captain and part of the Cougars’ strong senior class.

When Kreydt was starting for Springfield’s varsity as a sophomore, her job was simple: defend, and rebound. Those Cougars had Alexa Abbonzio and Rachel Conran, two 1,000-point scorers, and so Kreydt was able to keep it simple, offensive production not her priority. Even last year, on a team with no seniors, she was still focused on playing her role.
