Inspired Chester pulls away from Bartram

PA Prep Live logo

By Matt Smith

Maybe all Chester needed to end its three-game losing streak was a little inspiration from a hometown hero.

On the night they retired Rondae Hollis-Jefferson’s jersey inside Pickett Gymnasium, the Clippers got back in the win column Saturday night with a 69-49 rout of Bartram High.

Hollis-Jefferson is the fourth Chester High basketball player whose number was retired, joining fellow All-Delcos Horace Walker, Jameer Nelson and Darrin Govens.

Hollis-Jefferson, a two-time Daily Times Player of the Year, is recovering from injury in his rookie season with the Brooklyn Nets.

On the floor, the current Clippers dazzled. Chester (3-5) ripped open a 20-16 lead after one quarter with a 20-3 run in the second period. Donald Hodges (nine points) drained three 3-point field goals in the period as the Clippers seized control and never looked back.

Whippets take “giant step” in statement win over Chester

Downingtown West head coach Jason Ritter has never been one to let himself or his team get ahead of themselves. The Whippets have been under the influence of his “step-by-step” philosophy since he joined the program in 2011.

On the back of their warm-up shirts, for example, are the words, “One More,” signifying each small part of the journey to the lofty goals the Whippets set for themselves.

Some steps are small, some cover a good amount of distance.

And then, you have your leaps.

Leaps like knocking off one of the premier programs in District 1 AAAA, Chester, which Downingtown West did on Wednesday night at the Pete & Jameer Nelson Classic at Widener University, gritting out a statement win, 55-51.

Thomas leads rebounding effort as Imhotep tops Chester

Imhotep coach Andre Noble was really concerned about one statistic when his team faced Chester on Tuesday night.

“They’re an athletic team, and we thought if we could win on rebounding, we’d win the game,” Noble said. “And if we lost that battle, we’d lose the game.”

The Panthers outrebounded Chester by 10, and just as Noble predicted, they also outscored them, 67-54 on Day 1 of the Jameer Nelson Classic at Widener University.

The leading rebounder in the game was Imhotep junior Koby Thomas, who had 11 boards as the Panthers held a 34-24 advantage on the glass. Thomas didn’t just rebound, however. The 6-foot-6 forward also recorded a double-double with a team-best 13 points – a handful of which came via putbacks on the offensive end.

As Doug Costin shuffled to the bench with five minutes to play Tuesday night and a win securely in hand, the Bishop Shanahan center had plenty of time to ponder just how comprehensive a performance his Eagles had fashioned.

Shanahan throttled Bonner-Prendergast, 62-39, in the final of the Marple Newtown Holiday Tournament, thoroughly dominating every aspect of the affair from start to finish.

By the time Costin took his final walk to the sidelines, the damage was prolific: 13 points, 14 rebounds, a team-high four assists in orchestrating a devastating high-low offense and the kind of defensive post presence that completely unseated any plan of attack Bonner could’ve entered with.

Cheltenham passes test in comeback win at Penncrest

It’s not that Cheltenham head coach John Timms was happy about his team being down 15 at the half against Penncrest in the championship game of Penncrest’s holiday tournament.

After all, no head coach wants to see a team with high expectations thoroughly outplayed for an entire half like the Panthers were by the Lions over the opening 16 minutes.

But it was the exact kind of situation that Timms needed to see his team in, because he’s got the bigger picture–that is, a run in the District 1 tournament and beyond–on his mind.

“I’m preparing for districts, and if we get down 10 points in districts, which is very possible, how are we going to fight? Are we going to fold?” he’d been asking his assistants. “We got down 10 here, and I got exactly what I asked for.”

Jameer Nelson Classic Preview (Dec. 29-30)

City of Basektball logo

By Josh Verlin

The 11th Annual Scholastic Play-By-Play Pete & Jameer Nelson Classic returns to Widener University and Chestnut Hill College early next week for two days jam-packed with great basketball games.

Several state championship contenders from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware will be coming to the courts at the two area colleges for a total of 17 games that feature some top Division I prospects from the tri-state region.

Here’s the some can’t-miss games from the event followed by the full schedule; all teams from Pennsylvania unless otherwise indicated:

Chester vs. Downingtown West — Dec. 30, 7 PM, Widener
Two of the top teams in District 1 AAAA go head-to-head in what could very well be a preview of the district championship in February. The Clippers are still getting on track but have a deep and talented frontcourt led by seniors Jamar Sudan and Marquis Collins as well as wing Stanley Davis, but point guard Kahleeq Campbell is the engine that makes it all go. Downingtown West doesn’t have the raw athleticism of Chester but has its own experienced senior group led by Penn commit Ryan Betley, a 6-5 shooting guard, and 6-9 big man Josh Warren, committed to Cornell.

Malvern Prep has just enough left in second OT against Academy Park

The first words out of Will Powers’ mouth Monday evening spoke volumes.

“I’m definitely tired,” the Malvern Prep guard said. “We fought long. Double overtime, it’s hard.”

The final score didn’t conceal the details of a scintillating affair — a 98-92 win for the Friars over Academy Park in double overtime in the opener of the Steve Juenger Classic at Haverford High School. But that eye-popping scoreboard declaration somehow undervalues the excitement that helped assemble this classic. The pace of the game was what you’d expect if the managers filled the Gatorade buckets with rocket fuel. And between two teams that like to push the tempo like few in the region, the craziness of the game seemed to be in the offing as soon as both teams showed up for warmups in nearly-matching blue jerseys.
