Prepping for Preps ’22-23: Penn Wood (Boys)

By Jeff Griffith

In the spring of 2022, Penn Wood’s group of upperclassman veterans finally had the chance to be baptized by fire.

The 2021-22 season was the first opportunity for the Patriots’ current leaders to gain real postseason experience. For two now-seniors, 5-foot-8 guard Sadiq Fountain and 6-foot-6 forward Mekhi Shillingford, COVID interruptions and a sub-.500 record in an abbreviated 2020-21 season got in the way. As for the Patriots’ starting point guard, Anthony Murray was just a freshman last season.

Playoff basketball was largely a brand-new experience, which isn’t often the case for those who go through the often-successful Penn Wood program.

Even so, the Patriots fell early in the PIAA District 1 6A playoffs to top seed Methacton, but — on the wings of a pair of nail-biting victories — climbed their way through the playback bracket and ultimately earned a first-round victory in the PIAA state tournament over Parkland.

Boys: Freshmen make their mark early for Archbishop Carroll in win over Penn Wood

By Matthew DeGeorge

It wasn’t easy Friday night at Archbishop Carroll to spot which members of the Patriots’ rotation were freshman. It has gotten easy, however, to perennially rely on the program both placing faith in rookies and then watching them blossom.

Two of Carroll’s five double-figures scorers in a 77-66 season-opening win over Penn Wood were produced by that freshman class. Ian Williams had a team-high 16. Nasir Ralls added 10. And so the conveyor belt turns again in Carroll’s talent factory.

“I feel like those guys are prepared through AAU and their battles,” senior guard Dean Coleman-Newsome said. “They’ve been tested, so they understand that they’ve got to go in and play hard and be confident. The main thing we want for them is to be mentally poised and understand the pace of the game, controlling the pace of the game and taking shots that are timely.”

Boys: Meekins, Pendergrass III power Lower Merion past Parkland

By Corky Blake

To ensure they’d make the most of their senior seasons while upholding the lofty tradition of Lower Merion basketball, Teddy Pendergrass III and Jordan Meekins got to work early upon the conclusion of their junior campaigns last March.

And we mean early.

“In late spring, me and Jordan were at all the 5 a.m. workouts,” Pendergrass III said.

If you can shoot, rebound and play defense at 5 a.m. – a time considered the middle of the night by most teenagers – then performing in a foreign gym more than an hour away on a Friday night should be a breeze.
It certainly was for Meekins and Pendergrass, who stepped out of the shadows of last year’s 27-4 squad that reached the PIAA Class 6A state semifinals to spark the Aces to a 72-57 season-opening victory at defending District 11 6A champion Parkland.
