Defense, late spree carry Chichester to victory

Reading back the numbers, even Chichester coach Buzz Wood could hardly believe them.

Down 18 points after three quarters, the Eagles stormed back to a 79-69 win over Pottsgrove Friday at the Strath Haven Holiday Shootout.

More impressive was how they accomplished that feat: By outscoring Pottsgrove 31-1 in the fourth quarter, limiting a team that burned them for 33 points in the third quarter to just a solitary free throw in the game’s final eight minutes.

Leading the way was Derrick Welles, who scored 30 points and was 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Jamai Womack turned in a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Eric Montanez chipped in 18 points for the Eagles (5-3).

It was on the defensive end, though, that the win was solidified. The combination of Welles and Womack locked down on the Falcons in the fourth, while those two and Ray Drulik dominated on the boards to make sure Pottsgrove’s opportunities were limited.
