Charlie Thornton scored 14 points as Radnor won its 11th consecutive game to start the season with a 43-40 decision over Haverford.

Jackson Hicke amassed 13 points, eight rebounds, one steal and a blocked shot for the Raptors (11-0, 6-0 Central League). Cooper Mueller compiled 11 points, four boards and three assists.

Googie Seidman tallied 19 points and Nick Colucci pitched in with eight for the Fords.

In the Catholic League:

CARDINAL O’HARA 55, ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 53» The host Lions (4-4, 2-2) rallied in the fourth quarter to stun the Patriots (8-2, 1-2).

In the Inter-Ac League:

PENN CHARTER 66, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 44 » Kevin McCarthy dropped in 13 points and Sam Malloy added 12, but the Churchmen fell to Mark Butler (16 points) and the Quakers.

In so many words, Justin DiBona and his Marple Newtown teammates understood the trends at play Thursday night.

The Tigers had won six of eight to start the season, then lost three straight, all with the 5A school tangling with the Central League’s 6A powers. To start the second half of a 22-game season the same way as the first, DiBona knew the Tigers would need to buck the losing trend against Upper Darby.

With DiBona leading the way, they were ready.

The senior guard supplied 11 of his 17 points in the first half, staking the Tigers to an early lead on the way to a 62-52 win.

For Marple (7-5, 4-4 Central), the win ends a three-game skid. For Upper Darby (3-7, 3-5) a three-game winning streak halts. Such is the Central League crossover conundrum.

The good times continue to roll for the Marple Newtown girls basketball team.

Ellie DiBona scored a game-high 14 points as the Tigers won their sixth straight game with Thursday’s 57-30 rout of Upper Darby.

DiBona sank four 3-point baskets. Haley Levy netted 12 points and dominated the glass with 13 rebounds. She also shot 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Nikki Mostardi added eight points, while Mary O’Brien and Brooke Impriano had six each.

Marple (8-2) jumped out to a 32-7 lead at halftime.

Aubrey Ennis paced the Royals (1-9) with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. UD was playing without Alliyah Jean-Baptiste, who is the team’s second-leading scorer and top defender. Kareemah McCafferty stepped up with eight points and two assists.

A fast start was all that Sun Valley needed Thursday.

Evan Richardson led the way with 21 points as Sun Valley jumped all over Unionville and didn’t let up in a 59-44 Ches-Mont League win.

Sun Valley led by 11 points after the first quarter and never looked back. Noah Griffin and Ish Glasgow scored 11 points each for the Vanguards.

In the Del Val League:

Chester 48, Chichester 44 >> Larenzo Jerkins and Isaiah Freeman scored nine points each as the Clippers, playing for the third straight night, rallied with a 17-8 margin in the fourth quarter. Olayinka Itabiyi added seven points for the Clippers (5-2, 2-0).

Every time Chester and Reading play, Rick Perez knows it’s going to be a fight to the finish. 

The Red Knights’ coach has been there for enough battles with the Clippers — like the one two years ago that saw his Reading side escape with a four-point win thanks to a late Moro Osumanu block, or the five-point Chester win a year before that.

So even though Reading’s the defending PIAA 6A state champs and even though Chester’s dealing with a mix of youth and inexperience, Perez wasn’t fooled into thinking his Red Knights would have it easy Wednesday night at the Clip Joint.

“You’re coming to Chester, what do you think you’re going to do up here?” he laughed. “You’re going to come up here, you’ve got to earn your stripes.”

For both sides, playing one another is a bit like looking in the mirror.

In this week’s Boy’s Game-of-the-Week it was a high-paced, fast shooting game as the Chichester Eagles pulled out a win in the last two minutes of the game, defeating the Interboro Bucaneers. 55-51.

Maz Sayed scored a game-high 18 points, and Ahkir Keys supplied 11 of his 15 points in the first half to lead the Eagles.

Patrick Brennan led Interboro with 13 points, and Gavin Walls added 12 for the Bucs.

Izaiah Pasha sat there and stewed last summer. It was the first time in the 6-foot-5 Cardinal O’Hara junior wing guard’s life that he ever sat. He thought the Nike EYBL Peach Jam Basketball would be his coming-out party, where his skills would dazzle the gathered Division I coaches and doors would fly open.

Instead, he did far more watching than playing. His team was in Georgia for a week, played eight games. Pasha saw five minutes. He questioned himself. He blamed himself for the lack of playing time. He vowed that it would never happen again. He had to break through his personal threshold and come out the other side with a new mindset—looking to kill on the court.

It’s been this new attitude that’s continued to manifest this season in games like Wednesday night when O’Hara held off visiting La Salle for a 60-51 Catholic League victory.

Nadir Myers scored 22 points as Upper Darby rallied to defeat Strath Haven, 64-56, in Central League action.

Upper Darby trailed by five points after one quarter and eight after three but outscored the Panthers, 22-6, in the final eight minutes. Niymire Brown added 20 points, and Khyshir Slaughter chipped in 11 points for UD.

Jack Edwards hit four 3-pointers to lead Strath Haven with 21 points.

RADNOR 60, CONESTOGA 46 » Jackson Hicke went off for 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Raptors. Cooper Mueller went 7-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter to ice the game. Both he and Charlie Thornton scored 11 points, Mueller adding five assists and four steals.

HAVERFORD 62, PENNCREST 34 » Nick Colucci scored 16 points and JR Newman added 12 as the Fords spread the scoring to four double-figure scorers. Googie Seidman contributed 11 points and Tommy Wright 10 in the victory.

LOWER MERION 62, MARPLE NEWTOWN 32 » Eric McKee scored all of his team-high six points in the first half, but the Tigers had no answer for Demetrius Lilley, who scored 24 points in the win.

In the Bicentennial League:

DELCO CHRISTIAN 62, MAST CHARTER 55» There was no stopping Josh Parks, who hit five 3-pointers and went off for 34 points in the win. Josh Dell’Arciprete added 11 points,

and Beau Lyren chipped in 10.

In the Inter-Ac League:

HAVERFORD SCHOOL 52, PENN CHARTER 46 » Dave Kearney scored eight of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Fords pulled away. Billy Rayer added seven points for Haverford.

MALVERN PREP 69, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 55 » TJ Lamb scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half, and Kevin McCarthy added 16 points, but the Churchmen fell in the league opener.

Neither Penn Wood nor Chester had much of a blueprint to follow Tuesday night, not for how to recover from the dead stop of a midseason COVID-19 stoppage in what should be a fluid run of January games.

Chester hadn’t been in action since Dec. 19, Penn Wood since Dec. 16. It showed, slightly, early on. Later, however, Qadir Lowrie showed that some things shine through no matter the rust.

Lowrie hit a big 3-pointer near the end of regulation to nudge Chester in front, then he knocked down the two free throws in double overtime that iced a 70-66 win for Chester.

All things considered, the teams didn’t exactly look like they’d been waiting around since before Christmas, unable to even practice for some stretches. The players may have felt that time off, but they didn’t always show it.

“It’s definitely restless, especially for the guys getting out there,” Chester guard Isaiah Freeman said. “Especially early, you could tell. We came out here, we turned the ball over early, we let them hang around and we just were careless with the basketball.”

Sydni Scott can put her name among the best basketball players in Cardinal O’Hara’s storied history.

The Marshall-bound senior guard eclipsed the 1,000 career points mark in the Lions’ 68-43 Catholic League victory over St. Hubert Tuesday.

Scott, who finished with a game-high 16 points, needed 14 points coming into the game to become the 16th member in the program’s history to accomplish the feat. Eleven O’Hara players got on the scoreboard, including Maggie Doogan with 13, Molly Rullo with 12 points and Annie Welde with seven.

Elsewhere in the Catholic League:

ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 63, WEST CATHOLIC 13 » The Patriots (8-3) raced out to a 16-0 lead after one quarter. Taylor Wilson poured in 24 points and her sister Brooke had seven points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Maggie Grant pitched in with 11 points and Grace O’Neill managed 10 points, five assists and five steals.
