Boys Basketball Preview: Archbishop Carroll

As he lugged boxes of new gear into the gym at Bonner & Prendergast and ran through the practice agenda Wednesday, Kevin Funston had time for a smile. There was only one thing that still eluded him in his first season in charge of the Friars after four as Jack Concannon’s assistant.“I can’t say, ‘it’s not my decision; you’ve got to ask Coach Jack,’” Funston said with a laugh. “I’ve got to figure out a different excuse now.”

There’s a lot of learning going on in Delaware County Catholic League gyms this winter. All three schools – with Funston at Bonner, Ryan Nemetz at Cardinal O’Hara and Francis Bowe at Archbishop Carroll – are breaking in new coaches, an oddity in a Catholic League steeped in tradition where tenures are as apt to be measured in decades as in years.

Boys Basketball Preview: Delaware Valley League

Chester’s voyage to the PIAA Class 5A second round and a one-point loss to eventual state champion Abington Heights was powered by junior point guard Michael Smith, an All-Delco who averaged 15.6 points per game.

He’s back this year to lead a Clippers ship with a number of veterans returning for another season of Del Val League basketball.

Senior Rahmaad DeJarnette lost most of the season to a leg injury but averaged 8.2 points in the 11 games he was healthy to play. Rahmee Gilbert is a valuable backcourt piece, while Karell Watkins turned heads by averaging 8.4 points in 11 games since being called up from JV as a freshman. He, Zahmir Carroll, Javan Graham and Rahnel Sparks provide the foundation of a strong frontcourt rotation.

The other big addition is Akeem Taylor, the leading scorer for Chester Charter School for the Arts last season at 15.4 points per game and the nephew of coach Keith Taylor.

Boys Basketball Preview: Bicentennial League

Haverford School’s game had ended Wednesday night, but Jameer Nelson Jr. and Christian Ray were still playing the two-man game. The Fords are in a rare position in program history, defending an Inter-Ac title for the first time since 1999, which has Bernie Rogers’ squad toeing a fine line between pride and hunger.

“We just take it on, take that hungry mentality,” Nelson said Wednesday. “We just try to stay, what’s the word?”

“Level-headed,” Ray interjects.

“And motivated,” Nelson adds.

That postgame press pick-and-pop informs the dynamic the Fords hope to employ in their title defense. Nelson, like his namesake bound for Saint Joseph’s University, and Ray, a La Salle commit, are the headliners. But opponents that try to shut down those two exclusively run the risk of being trampled by the rest of a deep roster.

Perkiomen School falls to Haverford School

By PaPrepLive

It was the end of a fine start by the Perkiomen School boys basketball team.

The Panthers sustained their first loss of the season Tuesday to Haverford School, 59-42.

Missing open shots early, the Panthers fell behind at the half by 11 points. The deficit would not be erased as the Fords extended their lead to 48-21 after three quarters, though Perkiomen cut it down in a 21-11 fourth quarter.
