A few hours before the Neumann-Goretti Saints hosted Bonner-Prendergast Friday night, Saints assistant coach Pat Sorrentino opined, “Some days we look like we can beat the Knicks. Sometimes we look like we can’t beat anybody.”

The Knicks had their hands full in the NBA Friday night, so the Saints, who never trailed, knocked off the previously undefeated Friars, 78-70, despite 44 points from Miami recruit Isaiah Wong, who scored 36 points in the second half and 24 in the fourth quarter alone.

The Saints (8-2, 4-0), however, left with a win and more balanced box score.

Neumann-Goretti junior point guard Hakim Byrd led the way with 23 points, while Rider recruit Chris Ings added 19.

Wong’s 44 points not enough to save Bonner & Prendergast’s unbeaten record

By Matthew DeGeorge

There’s only one unbeaten boys basketball team left in Delco, despite Isaiah Wong’s best efforts Friday.

Wong scored a career-high 44 points, but Bonner & Prendergast couldn’t overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in falling at Neumann-Goretti, 78-70.

Wong had 36 points in the second half for Bonner (10-1, 5-1 Catholic League). He added eight rebounds. Donovan Rodriguez kept Bonner afloat early with 15 points.

In the Central League:

Garnet Valley 71, Springfield 59 >> Carl Schaller scored 16 points, including six in overtime, as Garnet Valley survived a scare against the winless Cougars by keeping them scoreless in the extra session.

Thompson helps youthful Glen Mills grow against Chichester

On a team of underclassmen that has been together for just a few months, Aaron Thompson looms large for Glen Mills. So as his Battlin’ Bulls saw a 17-point lead over Chichester whittled away to four Thursday afternoon and some of the younger members of the backcourt falter under the late-game strain, Thompson knew he’d be the one to stop the bleeding.

“I just try to get my teammates together,” Thompson said. “They look at me as a captain on this team, so I just try to bring them together, tell them to slow it down.”

Thompson’s stabilizing force helped tamp down Chi’s surge, powering Glen Mills to a 53-37 win.

The Eagles used a 9-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to claw within four points at 38-34, a comeback aided by 10 Glen Mills turnovers on 12 trips up the court. But the game-changing calm came from Thompson, the 6-4 forward.

Episcopal’s Dade tops 1,000-point mark in loss to Penn Charter

By Matthew DeGeorge

Matt Dade notched a personal milestone Tuesday, but the final result for the Episcopal Academy senior was bittersweet.

Dade tallied a career-high 35 points to surpass the 1,000-point threshold in his career, but he didn’t get much help offensively as EA fell to Penn Charter, 60-56.

Dade hit 14 baskets, including two 3-pointers. But he was the only Churchman in double-figures in a game where EA led by 13 points after one quarter but couldn’t hang on. Colin Chambers chipped in nine points, but Alex Capitano tallied a season-low four for the Churchmen (8-8, 1-1 Inter-Ac).

The Archbishop Carroll senior feels stronger, fitter, faster and better across the board on a basketball court and it’s a feeling he knows many of his teammates share. House and his teammates put a lot of hours into the weight room and the results are not only visible, but making a mark in games.

Carroll put its strength to work Monday night as the Patriots took down host Cheltenham 72-43 behind a physical defensive effort and a well-rounded offensive showing.

“We shared the ball, we’ve been emphasizing it in practice and tonight we did a really good job,” House said. “We have a lot of shooters so if we find the open man, we’re going to hit shots.”

Every player who saw the floor scored at least one basket for Carroll and six Patriots players scored at least eight points. While the offense came out firing, with Carroll connecting on five of its first seven 3-point tries, the defense really set the tone.
