Genetically, Neel Beniwal might not have been the most likely to reach basketball proficiency.The Garnet Valley wing’s mom is 5-foot-6. So is his dad. Just a sophomore, Beniwal stands 6-4, a guard whose height roughly matches that of Jaguars center Cade Brennan.

One endowment passed down from his dad has greatly helped, however. When Mahesh Beniwal moved to the United States for work from India, he fell in love with basketball. And he passed that along to Neel, who was born in the States.

“When my dad first moved here, he really liked watching Allen Iverson and he really liked basketball, so he just put me into basketball,” Neel said last week. “And ever since, I just liked basketball.”

That passion has paid dividends for Neel and the Jaguars. Beniwal leads Delaware County with 49 made 3-pointers this season, an average of about three per game. He’s averaging 15.0 points per game, second on Garnet Valley, which has 12 wins and is on its way to a fourth straight District 1 playoff berth.

Beniwal has taken big strides from his freshman year, when he was a regular in the rotation. He averaged 3.9 points per game, with 15 of his 33 made baskets coming from behind the arc as he and fellow freshman Carl Schaller got chances to impress.

Chester clinched a share of the Del Val title Wednesday, and it did so in style.

Karell Watkins tallied 26 points and 16 rebounds, and Michael Smith added 23 points as the Clippers won their 10th straight game, 81-24, over Interboro.

The win means Chester (14-4, 7-0 Del Val) gains at least a share of the title, with Academy Park and Penn Wood each having three league losses. Chester can clinch the title outright with a win Friday at Glen Mills or in two chances next week.

Rahmee Gilbert added eight points for Chester, which led by 32 at half and shut the Bucs out in the fourth quarter just for good measure.

Damon Dukes led Interboro (1-18, 0-7) with 12 points.

Two weeks ago, the question might have seemed fair. For a 15-0 Haverford School basketball squad, where and how was the return of injured guard Jameer Nelson Jr. going to make the Fords better?It’s no slight on the senior Saint Joseph’s commit, rather a testament to the team that had grown up without him, as he missed 14 games with a meniscus tear. Roles had solidified, and the unbeaten Fords were doing pretty well with what they had.

So where in that mix would Nelson carve out his niche?

An answer presented itself Tuesday, in emphatic fashion, with Nelson leading a smothering defense that blanketed Episcopal Academy out of the game, a 59-32 win that nudges Haverford School within one victory of a second straight Inter-Ac title.

“We played great defense, I think that was the biggest thing,” Nelson said. “And that’s our next step growing as a team.”

Shermik Lofton scored 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as Academy Park bested Penn Wood, 61-53.

Jalen Cassidy paired nine points with nine rebounds. Naseim Harley had 16 points (including three 3-pointers), six rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks for AP (13-6, 4-3 Del Val), which outscored Penn Wood, 7-1 in the first quarter and led by 15 at halftime.

Davanta Smith led Penn Wood with 23 points. Desman Johnson tossed in 13 points, and Zac-Chae’us Williams added 11 for the Patriots (11-7, 4-3), who were playing without Antonio Campbell.

The clock dipped under 10 seconds and Luke House made his move.In a timeout just before would prove to be the game-clinching play, the Archbishop Carroll coaching staff told House the ball was going to him and it was his shot to take. The Patriots have leaned on their senior co-captain all year for everything and they weren’t about to take the moment away from him.

House worked into the lane, pivoted at the foul line and shot the ball with a hand in his face and two seconds left on the clock.

The ball struck the back of the iron, bounced straight into the air, kissed the front of the rim and dropped through at the horn. By then, House was sprinting into a horde of Carroll student, his shot the winner in a 57-55 PCL classic that handed La Salle its first setback of the season.

“Our guards took care of the ball, I got with about 15 seconds to go, broke the five-count and went iso,” House said. “I got a good look and a good bounce on the shot.”

Grace Gormley and Britney Dike gave The Christian Academy some much-needed breathing room Monday, combining for eight of the Crusaders’ 12 second-quarter points in a 36-15 nonleague victory over Barrack Hebrew Academy.

Gormley (14 points, 15 rebounds) and Dike (10 points, 13 rebounds) each recorded a double-double. Deasia Speaks chipped in with eight points for TCA (13-4).

Shermik Lofton and Naseim Harley’s dominance in the second half was too much for host Central Bucks West to overcome Saturday.

Lofton and Harley accounted for 23 of Academy Park’s 25 points in the final two quarters of a 55-40 nonleague boys basketball victory.

Lofton led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Harley finished with 18 points and five assists. Derrick Northern put forth a solid effort with 10 points and five assists.

Also aiding the Knights (12-5) was their effectiveness at the free-throw line (16-for-17).

Hard to believe but the 2018/19 regular season high school boy’s basketball season is ending in just two weeks and that means that PIAA District One playoffs are just around the corner.  Playoffs begin February 15th and to help you keep track of who’s in, who’s probably out and who’s got a chance, we created a quick reference link to all six classification rankings.  Simple go to the right side of our home page and look for the PIAA District One logo and click on it.

The shift change queuing on the Ridley bench didn’t seem to make sense at first glance.

Midway through a stop-start second quarter, with Ridley leading Upper Darby by one, Ridley coach Kevin Kelly opted for a hockey-style line change — four up from the bench, four starters to the pine. With offensive execution in desperately short supply, a change of pace might do the trick.

In came undersized big Jalen Hudson, along with reserve guards Samir Neal and Aaron Tillery. And the momentum of the game changed with them.

Ridley scored 12 of the final 13 points of the half and stretched the lead as wide as 13 in the fourth before holding on to topple Upper Darby, 57-54, and earn their seventh straight win.
